Its fair to say 2021 is a year that we are keen to put behind us. Like most of you reading this, the seasons have been pretty cruel, enduring floods and continual rain throughout the winter making our winter program not only tough on the animals but staff too. Throw in some major wind events as well this has created a huge amount of extra work cleaning up flood damage and fallen trees. I must take my hat off to the team here at Peel Forest for getting stuck in (and stuck!) caring for the stock and property. Not only thanking the Peel Forest team but the wider community for all their support through this tricky year.
The venison markets are still fairly depressed due to not fault of our own. Covid19 is still disrupting the markets with logistics and restaurant’s not running at full capacity. I am truly optimistic about the future of our deer/venison industry as we have one of the finest proteins in the world. New markets are gaining a lot of traction and when the world learns to live with COVID, I believe we are in a very strong position. Our story, our product and our industry professionals are second to none and we will be the envy of all. This is no time to ‘hang up the boots’. In fact the opposite, we should be building our numbers and injecting the best genetics into our herds for a bright future ahead.
The stags are looking superb this year, even after the horrible winter they endured. They are a very even line and again we are seeing a lift in their statistics from last year’s line-up. W12ebv is up from 13.9 to 14.3 (top is 21.67) , yearling weights are up from 132kg to 137.5kg (top is 160kg) and CARLA is up a whopping 117% (top is 135.78). Velvet is again impressive, which is important to produce extra spikes off the yearlings before slaughter, which is paying handsomely at present, helping $/head out the gate.
You’ll notice a new sire in this year’s catalogue named Magnum, who we purchased from Pampas Heights. He is a Pure Warnham and is leaving some magnificent, quiet animals. He won the Reserve Champion at the national velvet awards in 2019 so not only does he have all the meat traits we strive for, he has great velvet. Magnum will have a huge influence in the Forresters moving forward.
